osteoSPAN is a bone graft extender indicated for use in posterior spinal fusion.  It is a calcium phosphate/calcium carbonate composite with interconnected porosity similar in morphology to cancellous bone.  All surfaces in the interconnected porosity have a thin layer (approximately 4 microns) of calcium phosphate in the form of hydroxyapatite (HA), the primary mineral content of bone.  The HA surface is osteoconductive and the thickness of the HA layer controls the resorption rate of the calcium carbonate substrate.  Large animal spine fusion and long bone models, as well as post-market clinical studies in spine fusion, have shown that osteoSPAN is incorporated into a bone fusion mass while gradually resorbing over time.*
